The Death Cure Book Review

James Dashner. The man has skillz. I guess what I love most about his writing style is that it's totally unpredictable. I'm the kind of person who tries to figure out the end of the book on the first page; well, at least the first couple of chapters. Now...I'm not saying this is a talent I excel at, but I can generally form a hypothesis that is at least in the ball park. With Dashner I really don't even see the pitches coming. The Maze Runner Trilogy in general is this crazy, hot mess of a futuristic/sci-fi trilogy that actually comes to a satisfactory conclusion at the end. This is quite miraculous considering the rest of the book.
The Death Cure starts with Thomas in solitary confinement within the WICKED complex. After being rescued from The Scorch, Thomas and his friends feel like the experiments are finally done. After reading the first two books of mind blowing social and psychological experimentation you have to wonder if the variables are really over. Did WICKED (the organization set up to save the world from a brain warping disease that is wiping out the population) get the cure it needed from the tests that were done to the Gladers, or are there still more to come? The whole time I read this book I was still thinking, "Real...or variable...?" It was maddening! One thing that is certain throughout my doubts in Death Cure, Thomas has had enough. He doesn't want to be a part of it anymore. Forget the rest of the world, he's out. The book goes full circle in the end, and despite Thomas refusing to save humanity from the flare, he ends up doing just that....... in a way. Now....if you're like me you're probably wondering if everyone ends up holding hands and singing Kumbaya in the end. Well, it ain't happening this time friends. Let's just say that J.K. Rowling, Suzanne Collins, and James Dashner would have a swimming time getting together and killing off literary characters. I guess I'm a sucker for American fairy tales and like to see everyone have a happily ever after.....oh well.
We've come to the end of the road in the Maze Runner Trilogy.....kind of. If you haven't heard James Dashner's big announcement, he's is working on a prequel that will be coming out next year called The Kill Order. From what I can tell it is going to center around the forming of WICKED and the events that caused the horrific disease, the Flare, in the first place. Sounds educational!
